Inspiration: Our inspiration comes from the inefficiency of the Canadian healthcare system. Many patients do not have access to family doctors, dieticians and other medical care. Our website is a way to help people in finding their diet plans based on their needs.

What it does: The website asks the user to select their health goals or medical needs, then provides tailored recipes accordingly. According to the user’s goal selection, the website filters out customized recipes from TheMealDB API, an open and crowd-sourced recipes database. Recipes are classified and presented in three categories: Breakfast, Lunch/Supper, and Dessert. There is a question mark icon on each button. When the user hovers its mouse on the icon, a concise explanation of the button pops up.

How we built it: We used Python for back-end development, html and css for front-end development, and integrated them using react and django.

Challenges we ran into: We encountered much difficulty integrating the front-end and back-end, due to our limited experience and knowledge in the flask.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of: We're proud of learning so much on the fly. We were able to build something, considering our project involved API, html, css, react, and django which we all have never worked with before.

What we learned: Each of us learned a lot about API, html, css, react, and django, as well as the back-end front-end integration process. Through this teamwork, we also learned a lot on how to effectively divide the tasks to improve efficiency. This includes having the website design ready for the front-end, allocating extra buffer time for back-end and front-end integration, and much more.

What’s next for Healthpal: To improve Healthpal, we could associate healthcare or nutrition professionals with users in need. Given the inefficiencies within the healthcare system, many individuals struggle to access the medical attention they require, whether due to the inconvenience of going to the hospital, long wait times for results, or delayed treatments. Healthpal website could then become a simple, user-friendly tool to provide more accessible advice and support to these users. Additionally, we plan to develop a Healthpal mobile app, making it even more easily accessible. To further enhance the service, we recognize that many users have multiple dietary restrictions or health concerns. With more time, we hope to implement the option for users to select multiple criteria, allowing for more personalized and tailored recipe suggestions.
