Inspiration
We were inspired by the difficulty people face in finding reliable health information online, where misinformation is common. Our goal was to create an always-available personal health companion that serves as a first point of contact for health queries, empowering users with well-researched, concise, and trustworthy knowledge.
What it does
HealthMitra is an AI-powered assistant that provides instant, accessible information on a wide range of health topics. Users can ask questions about symptoms, general health concerns, and remedies, and the application provides detailed, easy-to-understand responses within a secure and private platform.
How we built it
The project's frontend was developed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a modern and intuitive user interface. For the backend, we utilized Firebase for secure user authentication and data management. The core intelligence is powered by a Large Language Model, specifically the gemini-2.5-flash-preview-05-20 model, which processes user queries and generates relevant health information.
Challenges we ran into
One of the primary challenges was ensuring the accuracy and safety of the AI's responses, as health is a sensitive topic. We had to implement a system to filter out potentially harmful advice and make it clear that the app is not a substitute for professional medical consultation. We also faced challenges in optimizing the app for near-instantaneous responses and in designing a simple yet trustworthy user interface.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have successfully built a functional and secure AI health companion that addresses a real-world problem. Creating a tool that can provide users with accessible and reliable information in a user-friendly format, while responsibly managing the risks of AI in a sensitive domain, is our greatest accomplishment.
What we learned
We learned the critical importance of responsible AI development, especially when dealing with sensitive information like health. It was a valuable lesson in balancing functionality with safety, as well as the need for continuous performance optimization and iterative user interface design to build a truly reliable and professional-looking application.
What's next for HEALTHMITRA
We plan to expand the functionality by adding a feature for users to save and track their health queries. We would also like to integrate more specific medical databases to provide specialized information and potentially include a feature for local doctor and clinic searches. Our ultimate goal is to evolve HealthMitra into a comprehensive health management tool.
