Inspiration

In India, many people struggle to find simple and reliable answers to everyday health questions. Most health information online is written in complex English, filled with medical jargon, or scattered across unreliable sources. This is especially hard for people who are more comfortable in Gujarati or Hindi, and for families in smaller towns who cannot always reach a doctor quickly.

What it does

HealthMate AI is a multilingual chatbot that answers common health questions in Gujarati, Hindi, and English.

  • Explains symptoms, common conditions, and general wellness topics in simple language
  • Gives basic self-care guidance, such as hydration, rest, and diet tips
  • Suggests when it is time to see a doctor instead of waiting
  • Replies in the same language the user writes in
  • Always includes a clear reminder that it does not replace professional medical advice

How we built it

  • AI model: A large language model (LLM) powers the conversations, guided by a carefully written system prompt that keeps answers safe, simple, and factual.
  • Prompt engineering: We designed instructions so the bot avoids diagnosing, avoids recommending specific prescription medicines, and always encourages professional help for serious symptoms.
  • Multilingual support: The model detects the user's language and responds in Gujarati, Hindi, or English accordingly.
  • Frontend: A clean, simple chat interface that works on both mobile and desktop.
  • Backend: A lightweight API layer that connects the chat interface to the AI model.

Challenges we ran into

  • Safety first: Health is a sensitive topic, so we had to make sure the bot never gives risky or overconfident advice.
  • Language quality: Keeping the Gujarati and Hindi responses natural and easy to understand, not just literally translated, took a lot of testing.
  • Simplicity: Medical information can be complicated, so we worked on making answers short, clear, and actionable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A working proof-of-concept that answers health questions in three languages
  • Clear safety guardrails and disclaimers built into every response
  • A simple interface that anyone can use without training

What we learned

  • How important prompt design is for building safe and trustworthy AI applications
  • How to handle multilingual input and output in a real project
  • That good AI products depend as much on responsible design as on technical features

What's next for HealthMate AI

  • Add voice input and output for people who prefer speaking over typing
  • Support more Indian languages such as Marathi, Tamil, and Bengali
  • Add a "find nearby clinic" feature
  • Include trusted medical sources so answers can be backed by references
  • Work with doctors to review and improve the quality of responses
