Inspiration

In the process of forming our project, we were inspired by the modern reality that many everyday consumable products are highly processed and often difficult to evaluate from their ingredient lists alone. At the same time, the internet is saturated with misinformation, influencer marketing, and unsourced claims about what is “healthy” or “toxic.”

We wanted to build a system that increases transparency, rewards honest storytelling, and makes evidence visible. Instead of amplifying hype or silencing minority perspectives, Healthly is designed to uplift diverse, sourced viewpoints while keeping claims accountable.

What it does

Our website aims to inform users about consumable products and their ingredients in a structured, evidence-based way. Healthly allows users to:

  • Scan or search for products
  • View a breakdown of ingredients with contextual health insights
  • See cited claims tied to studies or regulatory sources
  • Purchase products through affiliate links
  • Submit verified reviews and receive a share of affiliate commission revenue

Unverified reviews are still visible, but only verified purchases qualify for revenue sharing. This aligns financial incentives with honest participation.

How we built it

Healthly combines several components:

  • Ingredient parsing and normalization system to structure product data
  • Health context layer referencing peer-reviewed research and regulatory databases
  • Revenue-sharing model built on affiliate commission tracking
  • Verification pipeline that checks uploaded images for authenticity using computer vision techniques
  • Citation requirement system that enforces source-backed claims

AI is used primarily for analysis and verification rather than content generation, ensuring trust and accountability remain central to the platform.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a payout structure that is fair while preventing fraud
  • Building safeguards against AI-generated or edited image manipulation
  • Handling scientific disagreement responsibly without promoting misinformation
  • Aligning monetization with ethical transparency instead of engagement optimization

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a revenue-sharing model that compensates verified reviewers
  • Implementing a layered verification system for images and claims
  • Structuring ingredient claims so that evidence is required and labeled clearly
  • Designing the platform to uplift community knowledge rather than influencer dominance

What we learned

  • Incentives shape behavior more than rules alone
  • Transparency must apply to both ingredients and financial models
  • Clear labeling of evidence and dissent builds trust
  • Technology can be designed to constrain manipulation rather than amplify it

What's next for healthy

  • Expanding the product database and regulatory coverage
  • Developing a mobile app with integrated barcode scanning
  • Improving AI personalization based on user profiles and sensitivities
  • Adding community governance tools for disputed claims
  • Increasing transparency around payouts and verification metrics
