Project Story

Inspiration

The inspiration for this app came from a desire to improve communication and emotional support for people dealing with chronic health conditions, especially mental illness. We know that health issues are very tough to deal with, and can often lead to loneliness and isolation. By creating a simple and secure messaging platform, we aimed to empower users to share their journeys, ask questions, and build community in a way that feels personal and supportive.

What it does

HealthLink connects people facing loneliness and chronic health challenges with peers who truly get what they’re going through. It offers a safe space to share personal treatment experiences, validate each other's journeys, and find hope. The app uses prompts to personalize connections and recommend relevant treatments, making support both accessible and meaningful.

How we built it

We built HealthLink using React for a smooth user experience across, as well as TailwindCSS for better UI styling. To store our data we used MongoDB to handle real-time chats, posts, and to secure user data. On the backend, we used Express and Node.js to implement our APIs. Overall, we focused heavily on designing a simple, friendly interface tailored to our users, ensuring that even those less tech-savvy can navigate with ease.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting up to speed with a new framework. It took some time to understand its structure and best practices, but pushing through helped us build a solid foundation for the app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we created technology that’s genuinely useful and accessible for members of our community. Moreover, the chat feature turned out really well, it feels smooth and reliable, which is essential for building trust and connection.

What we learned

We gained valuable experience learning a new framework from the ground up. We also learned how to properly implement live, real-time features in an app, which made the whole experience much more interactive and engaging.

What's next for HealthLink

Next, we want to introduce location-based features to connect users even more meaningfully. We’re also working on implementing a robust user verification system to keep the community safe, along with AI-powered recommendations to personalize support and treatment options.
