Your Voice-Powered Wellness Ally Empowering underserved communities with accessible healthcare technology

💡 Inspiration

Millions of people around the world lack access to healthcare due to language barriers, low literacy, financial stress, and geographic isolation. We were inspired to create HealthEcho, a voice-first AI-powered wellness platform, to bridge this divide—delivering affordable, multilingual, and intelligent healthcare guidance directly to individuals, regardless of their background or location.

🛠️ What it does

HealthEcho is a beginner-friendly AI web application that serves as a virtual health companion. It provides:

  • 🎤 Voice-powered chat with GPT-4o
  • 🩺 AI Symptom checker via natural conversation
  • 🧠 Mental health check-ins with mood tracking
  • 💰 Financial wellness coaching for managing medical costs
  • 🎓 Voice-guided health education in English, Spanish, and French
  • 📊 Health dashboard for progress tracking and goal setting

All while being accessible via voice-first design for low-literacy users.

🔨 How we built it

  • Azure OpenAI GPT-4o for intelligent health conversation
  • ElevenLabs for ultra-natural Text-to-Speech (TTS)
  • Web Speech API for Speech-to-Text fallback

  • Supabase (PostgreSQL)
  • Row-Level Security + Auth + Real-Time
  • Edge Functions for performance

💳 Payments & Hosting

  • Stripe (Global) and Paystack (Africa) for donations or premium features
  • Netlify Hosting as a Progressive Web App

🚧 Challenges we ran into

  • 🧪 Integrating real-time TTS/STT workflows with ElevenLabs in-browser
  • 🌐 Handling multilingual voice interfaces for non-English users
  • 🔒 Maintaining HIPAA-grade security and user privacy at scale
  • 🧠 Designing prompts for GPT-4o that were both medically useful and beginner-friendly

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully integrated natural voice conversations using GPT-4o + ElevenLabs
  • Created a multilingual health companion with financial and mental wellness support
  • Built a responsive PWA with <2s load time and <3s AI voice reply
  • Developed a socially impactful platform that could be piloted globally
