Health Connect: One Record, One Nation
A Unified SaaS for Safer, Smarter Healthcare
Seamlessly centralizing medical history across Canadian hospitals and clinics to prevent errors, enhance patient safety, and revolutionize care.
Why We Started
In Canada, accessing and tracking medical records is a frustrating challenge for many patients. Every hospital, clinic, and doctor’s office operates its own system, making it difficult for patients to consolidate their medical history in one place.
We saw this as a major gap in the healthcare system—one that leads to misdiagnoses, medication errors, and inefficiencies. Patients should not have to struggle to access their own health information.
That’s why we built Health Connect: a secure, unified SaaS solution that allows patients and healthcare providers to access and update medical records anytime, anywhere—ensuring continuity of care, no matter where they are in Canada.
What We Built
🔹 The Vision
Our goal was to create a secure, user-friendly platform that:
- Centralizes all medical records across hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies
- Provides patients full access to their health history
- Helps doctors make informed decisions with real-time patient data
- Reduces errors caused by fragmented medical records
- Supports AI-powered insights for better diagnosis and treatment
🔹 The Technology
To bring this vision to life, we used:
- Next.js + Vercel for the front-end (ensuring fast, scalable performance)
- Supabase as our secure database solution
- AI-powered NLP to translate medical terms into human-readable explanations
Challenges We Faced
🔸 Data Privacy & Security
Handling sensitive medical data means adhering to strict compliance laws like HIPAA & PIPEDA.
Solution: We used zero-trust security, AES-256 encryption, and role-based access controls to protect patient data.
🔸 AI-Powered Medical Acronym Translation
Doctors often use complex medical jargon that patients struggle to understand.
Solution: We trained an AI model to recognize, expand, and translate medical acronyms into Now, "HTN" becomes "Hypertension" and "ASA" becomes "Aspirin", making health records easier to understand.
What We Learned
- Healthcare tech is complex – We had to deep-dive into FHIR, HL7, and compliance laws to make the platform viable.
- Interoperability matters – Building a universal system means adapting to many different technologies.
- Patients need clarity – We prioritized simplicity in design and integrated AI-powered explanations to help patients understand their records.
The Future of Health Connect 🚀
We’re just getting started! Our next steps:
✅ Integrate more hospitals & clinics into the platform
✅ Expand AI capabilities to provide real-time health insights
✅ Enable doctor-patient communication directly within the system
✅ Build a mobile app for instant access to medical records
We believe Health Connect will transform the Canadian healthcare system—giving patients the control they deserve over their health information.
