Inspiration

This project is deeply personal to me. It was inspired by a painful moment when my mom was injured in an accident and faced an agonizing wait for emergency care. The frustrating delays, confusing hospital systems, and lack of swift access to medical help left a lasting impression that fueled my determination to create change. I started exploring the healthcare system’s flaws by charting timelines and hospital processes with crayons and paper at my kitchen table, trying to make sense of the chaos. Those early, manual attempts to impose order sparked my passion for data and programming. My first coding project, a messy video game filled with bugs, was my way of trying to organize complexity, just like navigating the healthcare system’s challenges.

What it does

HealthBridge is a patient-centered digital platform designed to improve emergency healthcare access in underserved communities. It connects patients’ health information from wearable patches scanned by AI to volunteers and responders who can act quickly. This helps solve real-world problems like delayed symptom recognition and limited hospital access, making sure people get help when they really need it.

How we built it

I used AI tools to set up the initial folder structure and the basic website skeleton. I wrote all the core features myself, including the login page, personalized dashboard, and the AI-powered health patch scanner. I occasionally used ChatGPT when I got stuck, especially while building the camera functionality and generating realistic dummy data for testing. I carefully reviewed and customized the AI-generated code and tested everything thoroughly to ensure smooth performance.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was handling inconsistent data formats and building the camera integration for scanning health patches. Debugging UI flow complexities also required iterations and external AI assistance. Balancing ambitious features with a working prototype was tough but necessary to deliver a functional demo.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I created a working AI-powered scanner integrated into a patient dashboard that provides timely notifications to medical volunteers. The project successfully bridges a critical gap between patients and responders, emphasizing usability and reliability.

What we learned

This project taught me how to blend human coding with AI tools effectively, leveraging AI as a helpful assistant while maintaining control over the code quality. I also gained experience deploying a seamless web-based health monitoring platform and improved my problem-solving skills for real-world healthcare challenges.

What's next for HealthBridge

The prototype aims to scale by integrating real wearable patch data and expanding volunteer outreach. Given that patches can cost as little as $0.02 each to manufacture, widespread deployment is feasible. We plan to partner with local stores and public health organizations to distribute patches and promote volunteer networks. Future funding will focus on enhancing AI accuracy and building a robust emergency response ecosystem.
