HealthAmigo — Learn. Play. Protect.

Inspiration

We were inspired by the need to make health education more accessible, engaging, and easier to understand. Everyday health situations can require people to make informed decisions, yet learning about them is not always interactive or interesting. We wanted to create a platform that turns health education into an enjoyable learning experience through realistic scenarios, interactive questions, and personalised educational feedback.

What it does

HealthAmigo is an interactive, AI-powered health education game that helps users learn how to approach everyday health-related situations.

Users can:

  • Explore different health scenarios.
  • Answer questions and receive feedback on their decisions.
  • Earn scores based on their answers.
  • Practise concepts through mini-games when additional practice is needed.
  • Receive educational feedback from an AI Health Coach based on their performance.

How we built it

  • HTML and CSS: Created the interface, game screens, and visual elements.
  • JavaScript: Implemented application navigation, scenario interactions, answer evaluation, scoring, and mini-game routing.
  • Python and Flask: Developed the backend and the API endpoint for the AI Health Coach.
  • OpenAI API: Integrated AI-generated educational feedback based on scenario results.
  • JSON: Used to organise and manage the health scenarios and their questions.

We divided the work between frontend development and backend/technical architecture to build the application collaboratively.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was connecting the frontend game logic with the backend AI functionality. We had to ensure that scenario results were correctly passed to the backend so that the AI Health Coach could generate relevant feedback.

We also worked on coordinating different game screens, maintaining consistent application flow, implementing the scoring system, and ensuring that mini-games were connected to the user's learning progress.

Another challenge was designing AI feedback to remain educational and focused on health literacy rather than providing medical diagnoses or personal medical advice.

What we learned

Through developing HealthAmigo, we gained practical experience in full-stack development, API integration, frontend-backend communication, and application architecture.

We also learned how to structure application logic, manage scenario data using JSON, implement interactive features using JavaScript, and use AI as an educational tool.

Working as a team taught us the importance of dividing responsibilities, communicating effectively, and integrating independently developed components into one functioning project.

What's next for HealthAmigo

  • Introducing more health scenarios covering a wider range of everyday situations.
  • Adding more interactive mini-games and learning activities.
  • Improving the AI Health Coach's feedback to make it more context-aware and useful for learning.
