Each year, millions of people lack access to essential medications due to financial constraints, leading to health complications and even loss of life. At the same time, a staggering amount of unused prescription medications go to waste, contributing to environmental concerns.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 30% of the global population lacks access to essential medicines. This is a critical issue, considering that access to medications is a fundamental aspect of healthcare. Meanwhile, studies show that the United States alone discards nearly $5 billion worth of unexpired prescription medications annually.

Our mission is to address these challenges by redistributing unused medications to those in need, reducing waste, and promoting equitable access to healthcare resources.

What it does

Our platform transforms healthcare accessibility through innovative technology, including the use of advanced vision models like GPT-4. Here's how our platform operates:

  1. Medication Upload: Users can easily upload images of their prescription medication, including tablet strips, to our platform.

  2. Vision Chatbots: Leveraging cutting-edge vision models like GPT-4, our platform's vision chatbots analyze these images to extract meaningful information. This includes identifying the medication's name, dosage, expiry date, and any specific instructions.

  3. Web Hosting: The extracted information is then hosted on our web platform, creating a comprehensive database of available medications. Users can trust the accuracy and reliability of this data, thanks to our vision chatbots' capabilities.

  4. Browse and Search: Individuals in need of medication can browse and search through this database. They can filter results based on their specific requirements, making it easy to find the medications they need.

  5. Access to Essential Healthcare: By utilizing advanced vision models, like GPT-4, we ensure the accuracy and efficiency of medication information extraction. This technology empowers individuals to access essential healthcare resources, even if they cannot afford them through traditional means.

How we built it

Architecture

Our platform, designed for the noble purpose of enhancing healthcare accessibility, was meticulously crafted using a blend of cutting-edge technologies. Here's a breakdown of our tech stack and how we built it:

Front End with React:

  • We chose React for the front end due to its component-based architecture, which facilitates modularity and scalability.
  • React provides a dynamic and responsive user interface, ensuring a seamless experience for our users as they browse and search for medications.
  • Features like medication listing, search, user profiles, and secure communication are seamlessly integrated into the React front end.
  • Real-time updates and an intuitive user experience were achieved using React's state management and interactive UI components.

Back End with Django:

  • Django, a robust and secure web framework, forms the backbone of our back-end infrastructure.
  • It handles user authentication, data storage, and core platform functionalities.
  • Django's ORM (Object-Relational Mapping) simplifies database operations with PostgreSQL, ensuring efficient data management.
  • User profiles, medication listings, and the secure messaging system are all managed by Django.

PostgreSQL Database:

  • PostgreSQL, a powerful open-source relational database, stores and manages our extensive medication database.
  • It offers data consistency, reliability, and scalability, crucial for our platform's success.
  • PostgreSQL's ACID compliance ensures data integrity and robustness, vital for a healthcare-focused application.

Flask for AI Backend:

  • Flask serves as the AI backend, responsible for medication information extraction from user-uploaded images.
  • Our vision chatbots, powered by advanced models like GPT-4V, utilize Flask to process images and extract medication details.
  • Flask handles image uploads, communicates with the vision models, and returns extracted information to the front end.

By combining React, Django, PostgreSQL, and Flask, we've created a seamless and secure platform that empowers users to donate and access unused prescription medications, ensuring wider access to essential healthcare resources. The integration of vision chatbots, driven by AI models like GPT-4, enhances the accuracy and efficiency of medication information extraction, furthering our mission to make healthcare accessible to all.

Challenges we ran into

While developing our innovative healthcare platform, we encountered several challenges, some of which were exacerbated by the fact that our team consists of just two members working from different time zones. Here are the key challenges we faced:

  1. Limited Resources in a Small Team: Being a small team, we had to wear multiple hats and manage various aspects of the project simultaneously, from front-end development to AI integration. Coordinating tasks across different time zones added complexity to our workflow.

  2. GPT-4 Vision Bottleneck: Leveraging GPT-4 for vision tasks was crucial for extracting medication information from images. However, GPT-4 had limitations, including a bottleneck of only allowing 50 requests per day. This constraint slowed down our development process, as we had to carefully manage and prioritize our requests.

  3. User Data Security: Handling sensitive medical information required robust security measures. Ensuring the security and privacy of user data was a paramount concern, leading to additional development efforts and testing.

Despite these challenges, our dedication and passion for improving healthcare access drove us to overcome each obstacle. We optimized our workflow, managed limited AI resources efficiently, and prioritized user data security and compliance. As a team of two working across time zones, we adapted and communicated effectively to ensure the success of our platform, ultimately contributing to our mission of making essential healthcare resources accessible to those in need.
