Inspiration
This project was heavily inspired by "The Useless Website". As a beginner team, we wanted to make a project that is both simple yet also offers lots of information, functionality, or reusability. This brought us to "The Useless Web", a website from our childhoods that would give you a random fun page whenever you clicked on the button. We thought we could do the same for health -- giving users random tips and tricks on how to stay healthy as well as various reputable articles and websites to go to for everything from workouts, cooking healthy meals, and medical news.
What it does
The website gives you a random health fact when the top panel is clicked, and takes you to a random health website when the bottom button is clicked.
How we built it
The website was built using HTML, CSS, and Javascript using a basic website template. GitHub was used to share files between our team members.
Challenges we ran into
First, it was a challenge to come up with an idea for this hackathon project. As our team was all relatively new to web development and this was our first hackathon, it was difficult to quickly come up with an idea that was both innovative and feasible. Another challenge that we ran into was becoming familiar with Git and Github, as this was the first time that our team had ever used Github to collaborate on code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Given that this is our first hackathon, we are proud that we were able to come up with an idea and execute it using an unfamiliar website (Github), using our current knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Additionally, we liked the aesthetic of the website, including small features such as the transparency of the button changing when hovered over with the mouse.
What we learned
We learned how to collaborate on code using Github as well as strengthened our foundation on key concepts of HTML, CSS, and Javascript that we needed in order to complete this project. This includes the hover selector in CSS, which was completely new learning for us.
What's next for Health Website Directory
Health Website Directory started as a small project with no clear future outside of RecessHacks. However, after finishing the project, we feel that the skills we learned from developing the website as well as the time spent brainstorming ideas for the hackathon can all be used in future endeavours to create a health-related application/website that will be useful for doctors, patients, and the average person alike.
