Inspiration

Healthcare professionals and caregivers often manage medical records for multiple residents across different systems and paper documents. In hospitals and disability residential facilities, quickly accessing accurate medical information is critical for providing safe and timely care.

Health Vault was inspired by the need for a secure, centralized platform that simplifies medical record management for healthcare providers and caregivers. Our goal is to reduce administrative burden, improve accessibility to patient information, and help staff spend more time caring for residents instead of searching through paperwork.

What it does

Health Vault is a secure web application that enables healthcare providers and caregivers to organize and manage residents' medical information in one centralized platform.

Users can:

  • Create secure staff accounts with email verification
  • Log in using JWT-based authentication
  • Reset forgotten passwords securely
  • Add and manage resident profiles
  • Upload and organize medical records for each resident
  • Generate AI-powered summaries of uploaded medical reports using the Gemini API
  • Store important medical documents in a structured manner
  • View resident information from a centralized dashboard
  • Securely remove outdated records when necessary

The AI summary feature helps healthcare professionals quickly understand lengthy medical documents by automatically generating concise summaries, allowing them to review key information more efficiently while saving valuable time.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing a secure authentication system suitable for handling sensitive healthcare information. We implemented JWT authentication, password hashing, email verification, and secure password reset functionality to ensure only authorized users could access resident records.

Another challenge was integrating the Gemini API into our application. We needed to ensure uploaded medical reports could be processed efficiently while generating meaningful summaries that help caregivers quickly understand the contents of lengthy documents.

Designing the database relationships between staff accounts, residents, and medical records while keeping the application scalable and organized was another important challenge we successfully overcame.
