Inspiration

Air travel can have serious impact on your health: it gives you jetlag, stresses you out and upsets your body's circadian rhythms. We help you go through entire experience with no stress and healthy sleep!

What it does

Healthy Traveler analyzes data from wearable sensors to make sure your air travel experience is pleasant and has no negative impact on your health. Our mobile app is a companion guiding you all the time.

Analysis of heart rate and accelerometer data allows to determine your sleeping habits. We also analyze your flight schedule to determine timeshift you're about to experience at your destination. Based on that we create a sleeping plan that gradually shifts your internal clock and prepares you for the new timezone. It also includes tips on when to seek or avoid exposure to sunlight. Thanks to all of this, you don't have to spend couple of days fighting with jetlag.

We take care of your stress level from the very beginning of your journey by taking off the time pressure. Finavia Airport API provides security queue times, so we know that you don't have to hurry If there's any change you can be late, we can offer you fasttrack upgrade or inform Finnair about your situation. On the other hand, we can recommend you some facilities around you to spend your remaining time.

At the end of your trip, we rate your satisfaction without your further input. Having numerous datapoints available, we exactly know how you feel and what puts you in such mood. Sensor data is useful again to detect moments of high stress, quality of sleep and fatigue.

How it's done

Datasources:

  • Wearable sensors. We have fitbits but can be anything with heart rate monitor and accelerometer.
  • Flight schedule is imported by scanning your calendar, no need to import it manually.
  • External APIs. Anything that can help us estimate time needed to get to the gate (e.g. security queues).

Based on your position at the airport we control time left to departure. If you should hurry, we sent a notification or an offer upgrading to fasttrack.

We have also implemented our own jetlag prevention algorithm. It's a simplification of scientific paper on that topic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Design of our mobile app is user-centric and intuitive, it's also similar to Finnair app which makes possible integration easier. We also require minimal interaction from the user. You just install our app and book your flight. As soon as it appears in your calendar, we start working. No manual work, no forms to fill. We are proactive instead of being reactive. We don't wait for you to ask for help or ask you to do anything manually.

Our learning

Data from wearable sensor has huge potential to improve air travel experience. With more and more devices appearing, possibilities are growing rapidly.

What's next for Healthy Traveler

It would be great to test our solution in practice! We see possibilities to integrate with more Finnair APIs. We could inform about emergencies as they happen at the airport. User satisfaction score can be automatically sent.

Deploying at scale would open new exciting opportunities. This weekend we were focused on single user perspective, but having data collected at scale gives endless possibilities of data science world. We could employ machine learning to identify common pain points, improve selling of additional services and finally take business intelligence to the next level.
