Inspiration Healthcare professionals work in demanding environments where proper shift scheduling, staff availability, and valid professional certifications are essential for delivering safe and reliable care. Manual scheduling and disconnected management processes can lead to shift conflicts, staffing shortages, and missed compliance deadlines. We were inspired to build Health+, a centralized platform that simplifies healthcare workforce management and helps healthcare organizations maintain efficient, compliant, and well-coordinated staffing.
What it does Health+ is a healthcare workforce management platform that connects shift scheduling, leave management, shift swapping, and compliance tracking in one system.
Smart Shift Management: Create, assign, and manage staff shifts while identifying scheduling conflicts.
Leave and Permission Management: Allow staff to submit requests and managers to approve or reject them.
Shift Swap Requests: Enable employees to request shift exchanges with appropriate approval and eligibility checks.
Compliance Tracking: Store staff certificates, monitor expiry dates, and alert managers about upcoming renewals.
Staff Availability: Provide calendar-based views of assigned shifts, leave, and availability.
Workforce Coverage: Help managers identify staffing gaps and find suitable replacements based on qualifications and availability.
Dashboards and Reports: Provide an overview of staffing, pending requests, upcoming certificate expirations, and scheduling issues.
How we built it We built Health+ using the MERN stack to create a responsive, full-stack web application.
Frontend: React.js with Vite and Tailwind CSS for a modern, responsive user interface.
Backend: Node.js and Express.js for REST APIs and business logic.
Database: MongoDB with Mongoose for storing staff profiles, shifts, leave requests, and compliance records.
Authentication and Security: JSON Web Tokens (JWT), password hashing with bcrypt, and role-based access control.
Data Visualization: Recharts for workforce dashboards and operational insights.
UI Components: Lucide icons and reusable React components for a consistent user experience.
The application is designed around three main roles: administrators, managers, and healthcare staff, each with appropriate permissions and workflows.
Challenges we ran into Designing scheduling rules that account for overlapping shifts, staff availability, approved leave, and qualification requirements.
Connecting multiple workflows, including shift assignments, leave approvals, and shift swaps, without introducing scheduling conflicts.
Creating a flexible data model for staff profiles, departments, certificates, and compliance requirements.
Implementing role-based access so staff can access their own information while managers can oversee workforce operations.
Balancing a clean, intuitive interface with the complexity of healthcare workforce management.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Bringing shift scheduling, leave management, shift swaps, and compliance tracking together in one platform.
Designing role-specific workflows for administrators, managers, and staff.
Introducing a compliance-aware scheduling approach that checks staff eligibility before assignments are confirmed.
Connecting certificate expiry monitoring with future staffing coverage needs.
Developing a foundation for proactive staffing decisions instead of relying solely on manual roster management.
What we learned We learned how to structure a full-stack application using the MERN stack, organize REST APIs, model interconnected data in MongoDB, and design secure role-based workflows. We also gained a better understanding of the operational challenges involved in healthcare staffing, especially the relationship between employee availability, professional qualifications, scheduling constraints, and compliance. Most importantly, we learned that effective workforce software should not simply record information; it should help prevent problems before they occur.
What's next for Health+ Our next goal is to make Health+ more intelligent, predictive, and production-ready.
Intelligent Shift Recommendations: Recommend eligible staff based on qualifications, availability, working hours, and workload balance.
Predictive Staffing Alerts: Identify potential staffing shortages caused by upcoming leave, absences, or expiring certificates.
What-If Staffing Simulator: Allow managers to evaluate the impact of absences and schedule changes before publishing a roster.
Automated Notifications: Send reminders for shift changes, pending approvals, and certificate renewals.
Attendance Integration: Track check-ins, check-outs, and actual working hours.
Advanced Analytics: Measure staffing coverage, overtime, workload distribution, and scheduling conflicts.
Mobile-Friendly Experience: Improve accessibility for healthcare staff who need to manage shifts and requests on the go.
Our long-term vision is to make Health+ a reliable workforce coordination platform that helps healthcare organizations manage their staff more efficiently while supporting safe staffing practices and continuous compliance.
