Inspiration
We are reminded of the importance of exercise constantly, but may find it hard to find the motivation or time to stay fit. In fact, only one in twenty young people and one in five adults follow physical activity guidelines according to the ABS. In the long run, the sedentary lifestyle will be the detriment to people’s health.
What it does
This is where HealthHustle comes in! It’s a mobile app that tracks your steps, converts the steps to voucher points and rewards you with redeemable vouchers of your choice. With this mechanism, HealthHustle motivates people to incorporate physical exercise into their lives through everyday decisions, such as walking instead of taking the bus when the distance is reasonably short.
How we built it
We designed the mobile app in Figma for an intuitive user experience. We built the app using react-native and ran it on the android studio emulator.
Challenges we ran into
No prior experience working with mobile development before (React Native), so the learning curve was steep. Some challenges in setting our app for cross-platform deployment with an API that only support Android.
Design-wise, although some of us had a bit of prior experience with Figma, most of us did not know how to integrate UI/UX design with FrontEnd, so we had to learn Figma's auto layout feature and the Material Design framework from scratch.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
HealthHustle motivates people to exercise regularly to earn their favourite vouchers. We all hear about the importance of exercise, but may find it hard to start and fit it into our busy lives. By providing a clear goal, we turn the intangible idea of fitness into viewable progress of steps, points and vouchers.
HealthHustle builds a community of people who are keen to improve their physical and mental well-being, and a marketplace for voucher sponsors to advertise their products and target health conscious users.
What we learned
As a team relatively new to hackathons, settling into an environment that expects high turnaround time for a polished prototype surfaced many challenges. However through this experience: we were able to absorb a lot of content quickly (esp. on react native development), working with foreign APIs, create usable designs in Figma, and spin it all up!
What's next for Health Hustle
HealthHustle’s potential doesn’t stop here. We can incentivise users to build streaks and remind users to meet recommended physical guidelines based on their age. And send challenges to friends, building a much needed sense of camaraderie and support through our fitness journeys.
