Inspiration
We wanted to create a place for the general public to be able to find all the information they need to without being locked behind a paywall. Most of the concept websites we found online were either confusing to navigate or had some sort of lock that you couldn't bypass without registering or paying. So, we decided that a good idea was to compile all the information a person needs for their health in one place.
What it does
Our website offers many personal health-related services, such as a Calorie Calculator, a Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) Calculator, and a Symptom Checker. The website puts all this information in one place where it is easily accessible for everyone to access.
How we built it
Our team spent a long period of time at the start of this event discussing what potential health-related services we could create. After looking at some online examples, we found that there were not many places that showed all the services to determine one's personal health in one place. So, we combined all our self-evaluation ideas and put them into one website. We built this website using a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
All the members of this team are beginner coders who have less than a year's experience in Python and JavaScript. We all decided that the best way to learn was to do, so we signed up for this event on a whim. We all started learning HTML and CSS from the start about a week ago to be able to undertake this giant project. One of the most difficult issues we had came with linking our GitHub accounts to the VSCode app. We spent a large portion of our time after the topic was announced to fixing three different errors when connecting our accounts and actually being able to code. Also, I was writing this section, then I clicked on the "additional info" section, and all my work here got deleted :(
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to learn HTML and CSS from its base in about a week, then create a somewhat functional website with a few services that could be helpful for people. We were all astonished that we were able to create a passable product at the end of this event. time management was a real problem when you don't know the scope of what you're undertaking...
What we learned
We learnt the basics of HTML and CSS and how much is required to create the simplest of websites with almost no functionality. We all also gained lots of experience in both working with HTML and CSS, and how these events function.
What's next for Health Hub
We would love to be able to improve our UI to be more user-friendly and modern, as it looks very simplistic and unorganized currently. Adding more functionality and service would also be a very big next step, and eventually releasing this website to the public would be amazing. These are both long-term goals, first, we would need to finish up the functionality of the services that we have already created.
