Inspiration

The market of clinical trials seems to be growing fast, more trials need more patients. Those days just prove how important it is to find the best patients as soon as possible. 95% of rare diseases currently have no treatment available according to the Pharmacy Times. Besides this, “85,4% of participants in a clinical trial rated the medical care that they received during their participation as better than what they would have otherwise received” is said by US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health.

The decision of participating in a clinical trial is heavy; it is like a jump into a deep and dark hole. The patient has to ask the doctor or they have to contact a clinical trial agency. Anyway, the patient has to ask heavy and awkward questions from strangers. This is uncomfortable and stressful. We think, we can eliminate this by our idea.

What it does

From the view of the patients, Health Finder is a site where they can find information about their health and potential clinical pathways. The patient doesn’t have to be open to participate in a clinical trial at all. And the patient can ask everything without contacting anyone directly.

Clinical trial institutions can receive potential patients according to their needs. From our users we can select people to have an unbiased group. Institutions have to connect committed people only who made a conscious decision based on real knowledge.

Pharmaceutical companies can well segment their advertisements in our user community.

In this system most of the things are accessible with a click only, without any complicated forms and settings. We offer visualisation of data and pathways everywhere where it is possible, because we are thinking sometimes pictures can transmit information better than complicated sentences.

For clinical trial institutions and advertisers we provide REST API services so they can integrate us without any difficulties.

How we built it

We used a business-oriented and a software-oriented method. In the business part we made a business model canvas to show how we imagine the business process of our idea. We think, that the user experience is also important. That’s why we continued the hacking with the software development part. Workflow, use-case diagram and sequence diagram show the schematic view of user experience and background processes.

Challenges we ran into

The regulations in the European Union or in the US are very different. Maybe that’s why there are no general and intercontinental services for clinical trials. The availability of medical data depends on the country as well. HIPAA in the US or GDPR in the EU grant protection of health data. A new service has to meet the requirements of these regulations. The accessibility of medical data is really diverse in several countries.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We formed our idea into a business model during this short time period. We are deep learning developers and data scientists so creating a health-related solution is huge challenge. During the hackathon we got connected with other hackers and shared our ideas. We got positive feedbacks from medical students and doctors. We hope, that judges will find Health Finder useful as well.

What we learned

We learned about clinical trial processes and the differences between the standards of clinical trials country by country. We learned a lot about medical decision-making as well.

What's next for Health Finder

We would like to continue this project to make a real life product from our idea. We have all the IT and data visualisations skills to build up Health Finder. To make this project real we need health experts who can compose perfect and flexible handouts for the patients. We are open to realize this project on its own or as a part of any other service as well. As a background we can imagine classical investment, venture capital investment or startup incubation.
