Inspiration

I was inspired to make this site because recently I have watched a few families I know, including my own, struggle financially, especially when it comes to finding affordable health care.

What it does

Health Empowerment allows for anyone to access links and directions to free, sliding scale, and insurance based health care in the Rochester Area. It also includes information about health inequity for people to become more educated on the topic.

How we built it

I built Health Empowerment using vs code and html and css. I also used a google maps software to create my own maps and a google translate API to allow for the site to be translated based on need.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into a challenge trying to get the twilio chat bot to work on my site. I was able to create one on the actual twilio website, but not link it to my own. I also had trouble trying to publish my site to a public domain to allow for everyone to access it. The last challenge I had was trying to read and save user input to allow for people to make suggestions for future sources.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Previous to this, I had never worked with html or css or vs code before, so I am proud that I was able to create something and learn how to use these along the way. To be able to see something tangible that was created out of nothing makes me proud. I am also proud that during the hackathon I was able to make friends that I did not have before!

What we learned

I learned how to make a website using html and how to use API's a little more effectively. I learned that it is ok for things not to be perfect because at the end of the day, I learned a really good skill, and created something cool!

What's next for Health Empowerment

Health Empowerment can be scaled up to a state wide, country wide, and national level if one had the resources. It would also have a feature to alert people when new resources are added. After this hackathon, on a smaller scale, I want to continue to update the site and figure out how to make it prettier as well as add more features.
