There is currently no one-stop app solution which enables navigation of the NHS healthcare options, which also efficiently notifies patients of the availability of last-minute GP appointments

In the UK there is a huge and increasing demand on NHS services, particular within GP and A&E areas. Average wait for a GP appointment is 2 weeks and many patients can expect to wait over ~4 hours in A&E.

Solution: Health Compass - Multi-functional Mobile App Empowering Patient Choice. Real time patient notification of ‘last minute’ availability of GP appointments (ie. resulting from cancellations). App links into patient's NHS number and to standard appointment booking systems. Also broadens patient's awareness of all available to local healthcare options which are accessible to them. Promotion of multiple healthcare resource options aims to guide patients to easily accessible options and help alleviate pressures on busy practices.

Challenges we ran into

Three of our four team members had little to none coding knowledge, with backgrounds in medicine and biomedical science instead. Thankfully, Souradip offered his expertise.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have a working demo of our website, where the key features of the app are functional and capable of being tested against new inputs. We're also proud of providing a solution to a very pressing healthcare issue facing the UK population, including a clean user interface for ease of use.

What we learned

We gained insightful perspectives into current opportunities and challenges in the healthcare system, especially after discussions with the sponsors. Great team, with mix of medics, biomed students and industry.

To progress further with this concept we need to seek and obtain more feedback from healthcare professionals, administrators and patients regarding concept and app functionality.
