Health Chat

Inspiration

The main reason we created this app was to spread awareness about different health conditions and to give people someone to relate to by making a new friend that goes through the similar experiences

What it does

Health Chat lets users search for people that have the same health conditions as them and start anonymous chats. The app starts by only showing the user their partner's username, health condition(s), language(s), and time zone. As users send a certain amount of messages or talk for a a number of days in a row they will unlock information about their partner such as their name, age, and more. For example, after each person sends one message they will unlock each other's names. For people who do not want to share information these settings can be turned off.

How We built it

We built the framework for this app using google slides

Challenges I ran into

We realized we had to make this app accessible to people with a large variety of health conditions and added an accessibility settings page to make accommodations for people who need it. We also realized that people can message strangers with inappropriate or harmful content, so we restricted images, videos, and links as things you can unlock after chatting for some time

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The restrictions for videos, links, and images that keep users safe. Our app is unlike other apps where you can meet strangers because it protects people from trolls who want to send inappropriate content or harm others

What we learned

We learned what we need to do to make apps accessible to people with a variety of health conditions and how to make our app easy to navigate

What's next for Health Chat

We wanted to start simple since this is our first hackathon, however, we hope to move away from google slides and start making our apps interactive using code in the future
