The Challenge
In the United States, accessing healthcare providers often involves long wait times, which can be frustrating and potentially dangerous for patients seeking timely medical advice. Moreover, conducting thorough online health research can be time-consuming and overwhelming for the average person. Many find themselves lost in a sea of medical jargon and conflicting information, unsure of what to trust.
The Solution
To address these challenges, I developed Health Buddy, a health information chatbot. This AI-powered assistant aims to bridge the gap between the need for quick, reliable health information and the often slow, complex process of obtaining it. Health Buddy provides users with:
- Rapid access to accurate, up-to-date health information
- Assistance in understanding general health topics and symptoms
- Help in locating nearby healthcare facilities
- Time savings in initial health information gathering

- Reliable Information Source: I source the health information directly from MedlinePlus Connect, a free service of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), ensuring accuracy and credibility.
- Advanced Search Capabilities: Utilizing TiDB's vector search and Jina Embeddings AI, Health Buddy quickly finds the most relevant information.
- Natural Interaction: Powered by Google's Gemini Pro language model, Health Buddy engages in human-like conversations, making complex health information more accessible.
- Location-Based Services: Users can quickly find nearby hospitals when needed.
- Responsible Health Guidance: Health Buddy is designed to provide general information while encouraging professional medical consultation for specific concerns.
Important Limitations
While our chatbot is a powerful tool for health information, it's crucial to understand its limitations:
- No Diagnostic Capabilities: The chatbot does not provide medical diagnoses. Accurate diagnosis requires in-person evaluation by healthcare professionals, as misdiagnosis can lead to serious health consequences.
- Educational Purpose: The information provided is for educational purposes only and should not replace professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
- Encourages Professional Consultation: Users are always encouraged to consult with qualified healthcare providers for specific medical concerns.
The Impact
