Schedulr

Inspiration

As students ourselves, we've often struggled to balance coursework, exams, and personal goals. Whether we're trying to improve our grades or simply stay afloat during a hectic semester, we noticed the lack of a tool that actively helps students plan and progress—not just track things.

That’s why we built Schedulr—a personal academic assistant that helps you plan smarter, study better, and stay on track toward your goals.

What it does

Schedulr is a web app that gives students more control over their academic lives. It allows you to:

  • Create an account and track multiple academic journeys (degrees or batches)
  • Input your current courses, grades, and target grades
  • Specify your available free time per day or week
  • Automatically generate a personalized study plan
  • Use the Sonar API by Perplexity to receive actionable suggestions for improving grades
  • Log exams, evaluations, and their weightages to track your actual progress
  • Create and manage a daily to-do list to keep up with your academic tasks

All progress is tied to your user account, and everything is editable so your plan evolves with you.

How we built it

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript
  • Backend: FastAPI with RESTful architecture
  • Database: SQLModel (built on SQLAlchemy) with SQLite
  • Authentication: JWT-based login/signup
  • AI Integration: Sonar API by Perplexity for grade evaluation and personalized feedback
  • Features: To-do checklist, multi-profile tracking, editable goals and time schedules

All interactions are handled via clean JSON-based API endpoints.

Challenges we ran into

  • Associating and updating user-specific data across courses, tasks, and progress profiles
  • Structuring the planner logic to accommodate flexible schedules and dynamic exam setups
  • Integrating the Sonar API in a meaningful and helpful way
  • Keeping the UI clean and responsive without using any frontend framework
  • Ensuring a smooth and intuitive experience despite the number of moving parts

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a secure, multi-user system with individual course and progress tracking
  • Designed a dynamic backend planner that responds to user input and time constraints
  • Successfully integrated AI to offer smart, personalized academic advice
  • Added a working to-do checklist with full CRUD support
  • Developed a full-stack app using only essential tools — fast, clean, and lightweight

What we learned

  • How to architect a modular, scalable FastAPI backend
  • Best practices in authentication, state management, and data modeling
  • Practical use of third-party APIs to enhance the user experience
  • The effectiveness of building simple, clean interfaces using just HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • The importance of flexibility and personalization in academic tools

What's next for Schedulr

  • Google Calendar integration for syncing tasks and exams
  • Email or in-browser notifications for deadlines and study sessions
  • Visual dashboards to track performance and time investment
  • Team mode for collaborative planning with classmates
  • Weekly planner generation using AI for deeper time optimization

Schedulr aims to become the go-to tool for students who want to study with intention, and we’re excited to keep building on this foundation.
