Inspiration

Elderly care is often neglected and not prioritized. We believe that elderly care is something that is something that can be improved further upon, especially with those impacted by dementia, without inducing a loss of independence.

“My grandmother was spending time in her garden while my family was away at work. She fell in the middle of a hot day and was unable to get up by herself. Several hours passed before the neighbor found her and gave her much needed medical attention.”

What it does

The HEAL Medical Assist Watch is specifically designed for elderly users and offers several essential features for safety. It includes a GPS tracker that family members and health authorities can access to monitor the user’s location in real-time. The watch also tracks heart rate and can detect spikes that may indicate a fall, sending alerts to both family and medical authorities if the readings are consistently abnormal. Additionally, there's an emergency button that users can press and hold for three seconds to quickly call for help. This watch combines practicality with advanced safety features to support seniors and give their loved ones peace of mind.

How we built it

Initially, we wanted to code our app using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Our main menu would give the user the option to pair with a watch device, check locations, health statistics, as well as making emergency calls.

Challenges we ran into

As a team with minimal coding experience, we struggled to implement a map that would actively track the location of the user. As seen in the screen recording, google maps would present an error. Additionally, we were not well-versed in CSS and were not able to make a visually appealing application. Our team went through multiple different programs, but ultimately our inexperience coupled with the short timeframe led us to use Figma to still be able to effectively showcase our idea.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to create an assistive technology that can truly benefit our elderly population. Our collective knowledge on hackathons and coding programs were close to none going into this project, but our team was still able to fully assemble and demonstrate our innovative idea. We truly take pride in this idea and improving upon it.

What we learned

As our team's first hackathon, we learned about how to communicate this idea into a more concrete and comprehensible model. Furthermore, as mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and statistics majors, we learned how to effectively code and design both an app interface as well as a model for the watch.

What's next for HEAL Medical Assist Watch

We plan on working alongside more experienced software engineers and designers to create the several prototypes that can be deployed for field testing and make improvements based on the feedback. We want this product to be an easily accessible technology to everyone.
