Inspiration & Initial goal

After going over our options for the project, the team decided to try the project suggested by HCSS, creating a dashboard for KPIs (Key Project Indicators). The dashboard would display metrics to indicate how various projects were progressing, and allow users to identify potential problems related to their projects.

What it does

At the moment our project displays a table which would have pulled data from a JSON file to display relevant metrics. After hours of tinkering & googling we were able to load data from a JSON file into an organized group of variables, but we were unable to incorporate this into the graph. Our plan was to build on this table system, and display various tables and graphs for different data points. We currently have three tables showing some data.

How we built it

The project was built primarily with HTML, and a bit of Javascript.

Challenges we ran into

Our team tried a lot of new technology with this project. Although it was exciting and ambitious to try new tech, it also provided some challenges which we ultimately weren't able to overcome within the time limit. Most of the team had little to no experience with the technologies needed for the project, including HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Git. Thus, throughout the hackathon the team lost a lot of our time struggling with syntax while trying to learn 3-4 new programming languages on the fly. I think the breadth of all the new technologies we needed to learn, and the time limit in which we needed to do so, were the biggest challenges we faced.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I think the team is all proud that we were able to try something new outside of class, and dive head-first into using new technologies. Since none of the team members knew each other before the hackathon, I also think the event helped us all to make new friends from the same field.

What we learned

I think we all learned that front-end development is not as simple as we had assumed. We may have underestimated the depth of knowledge required to complete a project of this type without the relevant experience, and assumed that it would be quick for us to pick up new technologies & concepts.

What's next for Team Elephant

Moving forward the team is planning to continue learning Javascript, and the other technologies used in the project. Although we aren't planning to continue development of this project after the hackathon, the team has discussed collaborating on other projects in the future.
