Inspiration

Upon brainstorming ideas for apps, one team mate was inspired by a nonprofit book store Books Are Gems, and took inspiration from the concept of donating to others. We decided upon a website for donating devices due to the global conflict of the digital divide, which continues to expand. While coming up with designs, we took some inspiration from Goodwill's website.

What it does

Our website allows the user to scroll down and watch a YouTube video through an embedded link. The user can then scroll down and view sample donated devices, available for pick-up, and requests for borrowed devices. Upon clicking a button to request a device or plan a donation, the user is sent to a new tab with a Google Form to fill out with information such as name, email, preferred pickup/dropoff location, and devices.

How we built it

We planned our website design with Figma, coded with react js and css, and hosted by GitHub.

Challenges we ran into

For 3/4 of our members, this was our first hackathon. Utilizing GitHub as a team was conflicting, especially for beginners with minimal experience using the platform. In addition to this, the use of Figma, the application we used for brainstorming designs for Donate Mate, took some getting used to. Coming up with designs for our website was slightly time-consuming, as well. Above all, with teammates in Pakistan, UAE, and USA, finding time to work together was difficult.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're quite satisfied with the color scheme and layout plans of our website. Having completed so much in only 3 days, as beginners, makes our team very glad. Our team members are especially proud of our idea, and believe Donate Mate has a unique approach.

What we learned

We gained valuable experience in team cooperation, use of Github, react js, css, and Figma.

What's next for Donate Mate

Our team members plan to continue to learn and implement computer science in personal projects and projects with goals for community aid.
