Inspiration

Hawks' Highway is an Eco-friendly travel planner, inspired by the need to address carbon emissions and promoting sustainable travel habits. It is designed for every day commuters and offers a gamified approach to reducing carbon emissions. The highway makes one recall the traffics and cars, which are one of the biggest factors of CO2 emissions for commuting. We wish to reduce carbon footprint and gamify the experience.

About us

We are a team of 4 students from Hunter college, first or second time attending a hackathon event. We love traveling, and we have a passion for sustainability. We are excited to bring this project to life. Features are still very limited, due to time constraints.

Purpose

This project aims to:

  • Track and gamify sustainable actions, specifically carbon footprint reduction from regular commutes
  • Foster community engagement in eco-friendly practices
  • Provide insights into personal environmental impact

  • Leaderboard System: Track and compare sustainability scores
  • Point Tracking: Earn points for eco-friendly actions
  • Community Engagement: Connect with like-minded individuals
  • Personalized stats: View your environmental impact

Struggles:

  • The backend folder from this repo is not being used. It worked from localhost but couldn't get it to work on vercel. You can try it, but you will need create a .env folder and get the database uri from mongoDB and also Google auth client id. backend folder tech-stack:Node.js, Express, MongoDB, Google auth
  • Spent too much time trying to figure it out, but in the end, we went with Supabase.
  • Frontend tech-stack: Reactjs, ReactRouter, Vite.
  • We explored several carbon footprint API and Google map API, however we didn't have enough time to integrate it into our project this time.
