INSPIRATION
Hawak Kamay was inspired by the gap between awareness and accessibility in Filipino Sign Language (FSL), where many students have heard of FSL but lack the ability to use it, leaving deaf children isolated and excluded.
WHAT IT DOES
To bridge the divide, we designed a mobile app that teaches FSL through interactive, culturally inspired mini-games, making learning fun and child-friendly while also encouraging families and classmates to join in.
HOW WE BUILT IT
We built it by researching existing resources and conducting a student survey that revealed high interest but low confidence in using FSL, which guided our design of wireframes and gameplay.
CHALLENGES WE RAN INTO
Along the way, we faced challenges such as limited child-focused FSL materials and balancing cultural authenticity with engaging mechanics, but we are proud of creating a meaningful solution grounded in both data and empathy.
WHAT WE LEARNED
This process taught us the value of listening to communities, applying design thinking to social issues, and collaborating effectively as a team under time pressure.
WHATS NEXT FOR HAWAK KAMAY?
Looking ahead, we aim to expand Hawak Kamay with more games and vocabulary, partnering with schools and advocacy groups, and introduce multiplayer features so deaf and hearing children can learn togethers, fulfilling the hackathon theme of "Connected Worlds" by breaking barriers and fostering inclusion.
