Standard navigation apps only optimize for speed, routinely directing pedestrians down hot, high-traffic streets. We built HavenPath to transform NYC open data into health-conscious pedestrian routing, evaluating candidate paths every 25 meters for shade, air quality, and traffic exposure across personalized health profiles. Powered by the Valhalla routing engine, the app combines tree census data, DOT truck routes, and community air pollution indexes with live solar tracking and heat forecasts to compute real-time environmental exposure scores. Despite tight hackathon time constraints and missing street-level particulate data, we successfully calibrated our scoring model, learning to frame results as estimated environmental exposure rather than medical guarantees. The result is an engaging, highly functional app that makes urban walking safer and healthier, with future plans to incorporate 3D building shadows and live air quality sensor feeds.
