My inspiration for this project came from a personal interest in helping refugees overcome challenges that they face while adjusting to a new country. I wanted to build an app that could empower refugees by giving them easy access to local resources. Additionally, I wanted to make sure that the app was designed with inclusivity and accessibility in mind making it usable for a diverse group of individuals, including those who may not speak the local language or have a lower digital literacy.

I used Figma to design the app prototype and focused on user centered design principles to ensure that the app was both intuitive and accessible. Haven features a simple interface which allows users to find resources, read articles, and connect with other individuals fostering community connection. I implemented multilingual options and different accessibility options to cater to diverse users, considering the needs of individuals with visual impairments or those unfamiliar with the local language.

Finding the right balance between simplicity and functionality was a continuous challenge while I wanted to keep the app simple and user friendly. I also needed to ensure it provided enough features to be truly helpful to users. Another challenge we faced was ensuring accessibility for a wide range of users. I had to carefully consider the varying needs of refugees including those with limited access to technology language barriers and different levels of digital literacy. To address this issue, I made sure the app was visually clear with easily recognizable icons and simple navigation.

During this project, I gained valuable insights into the challenges refugees face and how technology can help some of those challenges through this project. Through my research, I learned about the challenges refugees face including navigating complex legal processes, finding employment, and coping with the emotional toll of displacement. I also researched about the role that connection and community plays in easing the transition. Refugees who are able to connect with others who share similar experiences are more likely to feel supported which is why I created a space within the app for refugees to connect with one another providing vital resources but also a sense of belonging that can significantly improve the transition for refugees. This is a global struggle as many refugees around the world are left to navigate these challenges without the proper support and my app Haven seeks to change that by offering a solution that helps refugees thrive in their new communities with hope and confidence. In addition to this, I enhanced my understanding of UX design principles, and I also learned the importance of continuous user feedback and iteration in creating a product that truly meets the needs of its users.
