Inspiration

Growing up, we all swapped ghost stories and urban legends, but there was never a single place to actually find them, especially with real locations you could visit. We wanted to make it easy for everyone to explore Indonesia’s haunted side, whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a skeptic, or just here for the vibes.

What it does

HauntedTrailsIndonesia lets you discover ghost stories and urban legends from all over Indonesia. You can check out spooky locations on an interactive map, read their backstories, leave reviews and comments, and even share your own experiences. Every user can log in with Google, so it’s super easy to join the community and get involved.

How we built it

We built the frontend with Next.js for that fast, modern feel. Google Maps powers the interactive map and Firebase handles user data and authentication. We added features for reviews, comments, and Google login to make the platform more social and engaging.

Challenges we ran into

Finding legit info on ghost stories and urban legends was a grind, since a lot of stories are just passed around by word of mouth. Getting Google Maps to play nice with custom markers and user interactions took some serious trial and error. Making sure reviews, comments, and login all worked smoothly together was another big challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re hyped that we brought Indonesia’s ghost stories and urban legends to life in a way that’s actually fun and interactive. The map feature is super smooth, and seeing people leave their own reviews and comments is honestly the best part. We’re also proud of how seamless the Google login is, and how the whole thing just works.

What we learned

We picked up a ton about Next.js, Firebase, and integrating Google Maps for real-world use. Building out reviews, comments, and Google login taught us a lot about user experience and security. We got way better at working as a team, solving problems on the fly, and making sure everything feels smooth for users.

What's next for HauntedTrailsIndonesia

We want to take things up a notch with 3D maps, since Google Maps doesn’t have 3D support for Indonesia yet. That’s a big goal for us. We’re also planning to let users upload photos and expand the database with more ghost stories and urban legends. Most importantly, we’re all about building a bigger community to connect, share, and vibe with fellow ghost story fans across Indonesia. The dream is to make HauntedTrailsIndonesia the go-to spot for everything spooky and legendary in Indonesia.
