🎃 Inspiration
Developers spend too much time swapping between terminals, editors, GUI tools, and open windows. It breaks flow. Terminals are still stuck in the past: powerful but visually static.
We wanted a workspace that feels cinematic, premium, and immersive. A terminal that blends art and engineering.
Nimbus is that idea brought to life. Haunted Terminal is Nimbus wrapped in a spooky visual identity.
👻 What it does
Nimbus is a premium terminal emulator built on Hyper’s proven engine with a hauntingly beautiful visual style inspired by Ghosty. It features:
- Instant theme and cursor marketplace
- Ghost-smooth animations and clarity focused design
- Reliable xterm.js powered terminal emulation
- Plugin-friendly architecture for custom workflows
⚡ How we built it
Nimbus uses Electron for native cross-platform integration, React with TypeScript for the interface, and xterm.js for terminal emulation.
We extended Hyper’s core while adding our own isolated tab process architecture and advanced styling.
Kiro was a major development boost
- Vibe coding helped scaffold the Electron environment and major logic
- Spec driven development structured the isolation architecture
- Hooks automated theme pack creation and installation
- Steering docs kept code consistent and clean
Kiro removed friction so we could push deeper into innovation and visual rigor.
🧟 Challenges we ran into
- Achieving true tab process isolation with responsiveness
- Building real time theme installation without flicker
- Balancing the horror aesthetic with professional usability
- Ensuring stability while extending Hyper’s core
🔥 Accomplishments we are proud of
- A working prototype of a hybrid terminal concept
- Live theme marketplace and real customization
- Elegant performance-respecting animations
- A developer tool that feels emotional and alive
🧠 What we learned
- Kiro accelerates complex workflows when combined with strict specs
- Developer tools benefit from narrative and atmosphere
- Electron offers more room for architecture than common wisdom says
🔮 What is next for Haunted Terminal
- Full GUI-in-terminal support past proof of concept
- Advanced workspace layouts and tools
- Plugin and extension ecosystem
- Cloud-synced developer profiles
- AI-assisted workspace automation
- Public waitlist release
Ps: GUI is still in development ... it's future scope and we welcome open source contributors
Nimbus aims to redefine the terminal as a complete developer workspace.
