Inspiration
Inspiration: Our group decided to develop a game as we wanted to challenge our current coding knowledge in an engaging and creative way, while also having some fun with it. After brainstorming ideas, we found inspiration in the early Adobe Flash point-and-click and escape room games we used to play during our childhoods. These games captivated us with their blend of puzzles, exploration, and interactive storytelling, and we saw an opportunity to recreate that nostalgic experience with our own unique twist. Legend has it that Martha Jane Poe McDaniel donated her quilts to the Early American Room, and now her spirit remains attached to them.
What it does
Haunted Cathy is an adventure game full of puzzles and exploration. In order to finish Chapter 1, you must complete two puzzles that unlock the Early American room.
How we built it
Our game was built on Unity using C#. The art and animations were made on Aseprite and PixelStudio.
Challenges we ran into
None of us had any experience with game dev previous to this project. We had to learn how to code in C#, use Unity, make pixel art, and animate all in one weekend. We also ran into a lot of difficulties with GitHub and Unity as they do not necessarily play nice with each other.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned the basics of game dev! It was a lot less straightforward than what we imagined, and we spent hours on things we thought would barely take any time, but we did it and we all feel quite proud of ourselves!
What we learned
We learned how to develop a game. More specifically, we learned how to use Unity and how to code in C#, since this was all of our first times making a game. We each learned to be patient with not just each other but ourselves as we were all learning together as a team.
What's next for Haunted Cathy
What we completed is only Chapter 1 of Haunted Cathy. We plan to create more chapters with more plot twists and challenges to keep users engaged.
