Inspiration
Hate crimes are on the rise in the United States and other parts of the world. Hate speech is one tool that a person or group uses to let out feelings of bias, hatred, and prejudice towards religion, race, ethnicity, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender, or disability thereby spreading hatred. There are many reasons for this. Hate speech on social media, fake news, manipulated articles by media etc. This has resulted in an irrational fear towards some communities like Muslims.
Some problems faced by Muslims are :
- Physical and verbal attack on property, places of worship
- Verbal and online threats of violence, vilification and abuse
- Policies and legislation that targets the the community just because of their religion
- Discrimination in education, employment, housing etc.
- Ethic and religious profiling and police abuse
What it does
The app has the following features :
Vocabulary: Makes user aware of commonly used words in other religions so that they do not misuse it and hurt their sentiments.
(Southwest Airlines last year removed a man from a plane after he spoke on his phone in Arabic and said “Insh-Allah”, meaning God willing.)
Hate Meter: Answer questions to know if you have Islamophobia or hate towards other races, religion.
Forum: Here people can connect with a community of people who are from other parts of the world and try to understand them as communication is the only key and it's important to know others and their beliefs.
Who you are?: You can enter your Twitter username and get an analysis of the type of person you are like are you peace-loving, respectful towards others, or not
Extension: Directs you to the Hate-Free extension for chrome which when added prevents users from using hate words in tweets
Campaign: Shows community events and campaigns going on currently where you can show your support
How I built it
I built it using flutter and dart which is a cross-platform development framework. I used tweepy and Twitter API for extracting tweets and then analyzed them by using the hate-sonar library to categorize them
Challenges I ran into
Worked with Twitter API for the first so it was tough for me to figure out things
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am happy that I was able to implement some of the features that I planned during the ideation
What I learned
I learned a lot about this problem and the reasons which contributed to such crimes and hate.
What's next for Hate Free
More features in chrome extension so that it can give an analysis of the type of content that user is consuming like news articles, social media etc.
Built With
- dart
