Inspiration
Just a few nights previous to the Hackathon, we watched Interstellar and were intrigued by its story and the thought-provoking concepts it explored. When we decided to create a game, we drew from its apocalyptic vision: a world where crops fail year by year and humanity is in decline. Inspired by this setting, we wanted to build our own version of a dying Earth.
What it does
Our game aims to illustrate the harsh struggle of survival in a collapsing world, and the emotional challenge of trying to preserve a planet on the brink of ruin. Yet, hope is not completely lost. Our game's focus on engineering and problem-solving provide a new lesson on resilience.
How we built it
We built it using Unity engine to make the game, and paint.net for the illustrations. The scripts for the code are written in C#.
Challenges we ran into
This was our first Unity project, so we encountered many challenges in getting used to the interface's many options and drop downs. It was difficult to navigate at first, without knowing where we can find what is needed. By familiarizing ourselves with the different folders and features of Unity, we were able to create a demo for our game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of ourselves for figuring out Unity and getting it to work. It was very frustrating at first, as we knew nothing of how to use it, but as we played with it more and more, we began to feel proud of ourselves. We were not only able to make a starting screen, but also a character that moves and create cutscenes that occur with character interactions.
What we learned
We were able to learn how to use the Unity application to create games. We were able to familiarize ourselves with C# language as well as the Unity features. We also learned about what goes behind the making of a pixel art game, such as dynamic dialogue and tilemaps.
What's next for Harvest Protocol
We shall continue the game in the future, making it so that crops can be grown in order to preserve humanity and we will create more characters and objects to interact with. We wish to make this into a full game and complete the story.
