Inspiration
I've always loved cozy games like Stardew Valley and passive mobile games you can pop in to when you've got a few minutes to spare, so I decided to start my game developer journey with a simple and cute Match-3 style game. With a lot of help of Kiro I was able to make that fantasy a reality on Reddit thanks to the Devvit Program!
What it does
HarvestMatch is a simple swipe (or tap) to play Match-3 style game. You start at level 1 and have to match crops of the same type. Matching 4 or more crops earns boosters that clear crops even faster to meet the level goal. At this time there are 10 themes and 100 levels that gradually get more challenging . "Weather" is introduced after level 40 in the form of Rocks, Weeds, and Flood! There's a shop users can buy boosters, a Trophy Case where users can unlock achievements and trophies. I added a Community Garden element where Redditors have to unite to water a flower that progressively grows to earn free booster gifts!
How we built it
I built the entire game in 1 week with Kiro. I used React. I have no prior programming experience.
Challenges we ran into
Lack of experience with coding and a short deadline for the contest made this process very stressful for me. This was my first experience vibe coding and I had to learn the hard way the importance of backing up my progress.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm so proud of myself for making A GAME! I've always wanted to but it seemed like such an impossible feat. The Devvit partnership with Kiro helped make it happen.
What we learned
So much. I learned some Typescript basics, how to navigate a src file, all the steps for building a game - wow! This would've been way too overwhelming of a process for me if Kiro didn't help walk me through it. I think its speaks volumes I was able to make this with no prior experience. I didn't even know how what Command Prompt was a week ago. By the end of the week I was guiding it and able to write some code myself.
What's next for Harvest Match
My big plan for this new adventure is to add limited time events, and a lot more themed levels. I'm going to make more cozy games like HarvestMatch that will all be on r/CozyTownGames.
