Inspiration

I was inspired by the Financial Times game "The Climate Game"

What it does

Initially the user ends up on a landing page where they get a glimpse into a kind of "backstory" of the game. They navigate through two sets of information, which very briefly talk about what is happening, and what will happen. After this they can play a short game I made, which involves them making choices between three options, whatever they select defines the next question which makes it a slightly more unique experience for each person.

How I built it (we will come to why the I is bolded later)

I built this product using HTML and CSS for all the front end tasks and used Javascript to allow the game to function without having to hardcode hundreds of HTML pages (coding the three I did was enough for me 😂)

Challenges I ran into

Initially, I was working with three other people for this hackathon, but about 60% through the hackathon they decided to call it a day. So I had to code this project in about 9 hours (but hey, used this from submitting assignments last minute throughout high school, I definitely dealt with this pressure with caffeine 😉). So yep, the big challenge was thinking on the fly in 9 hours what I could transform this project into to, and ended up remembering the Financial Times game and came to this idea. Finally, it was quite hard to create a semi-cohesive storyline for the questions and to create one that would at least go through some rounds before ending.

Accomplishments

The biggest one definitely being submitting this before the deadline, I feel I could have worked more but I at least wanted to have a Minimum Viable Product to showcase what my vision looked like (and also sleep to you know pitch this somehow 😅) Another thing I am quite proud of is the UI that I ended up on, at least I believe that it gives a minimalistic feel giving all the information you need in a cohesive and user-friendly way. Finally, I am really proud of creating some sense of a storyline which, trust me was really hard.

What I learned

I learned how to use JavaScript to create a branched storyline kind of game, and also learned through the process that coding for a deadline is way harder than trying to submit homework just before the deadline.

What's next for Harvest Horizon

I wish to make the UI a bit more polished as I think some parts were not as polished as I would have liked. and further create some variables or statistics in the future to map how "good" your decisions were in the game, as currently, it is just making choices for yourself. Additionally, I believe going forward if I could create some way in which there could be scoring system in which you can see how well you did compared to other people could be quite an interesting to do.
