Inspiration

We love tabletop games and were excited to develop on the Tilt Five hardware. Inspired by the “wand” controller and love for the magical girl anime genre, we designed a rhythm game that immerses players in a fantasy world to interact with music and challenge their sense of timing.

What it does

MagiBeat Flow is a game where players use the Tilt Five AR system to control a holographic magical girl character, moving her to intercept beats that come from the far end of the board towards the player. Players must use the Tilt Five wand to accurately point at the correct position and timing to hit the heart objects and maintain their combo score. The goal is to survive until the end of the level, with the game's difficulty scaling up as the player progresses through more difficult songs.

How we built it

During the hackathon, we developed MagiBeat Flow using Unity and the Tilt Five SDK, focusing on creating a responsive and visually engaging AR experience. Our team divided the tasks to one focused on Unity development, two focused on creating 2D and 3D game assets, and two focused on the video, audio, and script.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was ensuring that the beat detection was accurate and that the visual elements of the game were perfectly synchronized with the audio. Our solution was to calculate the rough bpm of the song and add some noise to maintain the challenge of our rhythm game. We also had to consider the limitations of the Tilt Five system and find creative ways to use the wand for gameplay interactions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are super proud of our dancing 3D magical girl avatar we created among all the assets in our game!

What we learned

We learned a great deal about AR development, particularly with the Tilt Five system, and gained experience in beat mapping.

What's next for MagiBeat Flow

Moving forward, we also aim to build a community around the game by allowing players to create and share their own beat maps for their favorite songs. We plan to refine MagiBeat Flow by improving the beat detection algorithm to publish a user-friendly beat mapping editor, adding more songs and difficulty levels, and introducing character customization options. Ultimately, we hope to release MagiBeat Flow to the public, providing a new way for players to enjoy music and AR gaming.
