Inspiration
In highschool, during the Pandemic, my friend's older brother, Oliver committed suicide. I was very shaken by the incident since it was the first time I encountered death in a personal way. Ever since then I always felt personally responsible for helping prevent suicide and combatting depression. I am very grateful that at HackBeanpot, I found an opportunity to use the CS skills I learnt at Northeastern to impact the world in a positive way.
What it does
Harmony AI is an innovative website that harnesses the power of AI to provide personalized music therapy recommendations for individuals dealing with depression and mental health challenges. Our chatbot, MelodyBot, engages users in empathetic conversations, understanding their emotional state and preferences. MelodyBot can understand complex feelings, and recommend therapeutic songs, playlists, and calming melodies tailored to each user’s unique needs.
How we built it
We created a website using ReactJS and Tailwind CSS. The backend was created using Node.js's Axios library which inferences gpt-3.5-turbo Chat Completions API. Tested with Postman and version control with Github. Deployed on Vercel.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we had was a small team size, with only 3 members and one who was busy for almost the entirety of the hackathon. Another was the small time constraint because we missed the entire first day due to midterms. However with good teamwork, we are very proud we were able to get a full stack web app running despite our lack of experience in web design (especially React and Nodejs).
What we learned
We learnt a lot at HackBeanpot. All the way from technical skills like React, TailwindCSS and what API's are at the Postman workshop, but we also learnt how to function better as a team and better communication skills.
What's next for Harmony AI
We want to continue supporting Harmony AI. We would like to add more resources for mental health. Additionally we are also interested in analyzing trends between song genres and human emotions, so that we can finetune a better AI system. Finally we want to publish this as a free and open source tool to spread positivity everywhere.
