Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea that technology can not only analyze but also amplify human creativity. Artists, musicians, and storytellers often struggle to find communities that truly understand their vision. We wanted to build a tool that celebrates individuality while fostering meaningful connections across creative domains.
What it does
Take a fun personality quiz tailored around art, music, storytelling, and fashion. Receive a personalized AI-generated artistic profile that captures their creative style. Get matched with other users who share similar artistic personalities. Join “rooms” that bring together groups of like-minded creatives, encouraging collaboration and cultural exchange.
How we built it
Frontend with React for an engaging and clean interface. Backend with Node.js and Express to handle quiz logic, AI analysis, and user authentication. Database with SQLite for storing users, quiz responses, and profiles. AI integration with GPT-powered APIs to generate unique artistic descriptions and enable personality-based matching.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring AI-generated profiles felt personalized and diverse rather than repetitive. Designing a matching algorithm that balanced similarity with variety so users discover both familiar and fresh perspectives. Building an interface that scaled from 1-on-1 matches to group “rooms”, while keeping the design intuitive. Debugging cross-platform installation issues (dependencies like SQLite, Node versions).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully built a platform that bridges AI, culture, and human connection in under 36 hours. Created a unique artistic profile generator that makes every user feel seen. Implemented group matching rooms, moving beyond just one-to-one connections. Built a polished design that mirrors our Figma vision and enhances user experience.
What we learned
How to balance AI creativity with technical constraints to make outputs both meaningful and efficient. The importance of UI/UX consistency when integrating multiple features (quiz, profiles, rooms). How to collaborate under time pressure, dividing work between frontend, backend, and design while staying aligned. That culture-driven projects require both technical innovation and empathy.
What's next for Harmoni
Expanding personality quizzes into more artistic domains (film, photography, dance, etc.). Enhancing the AI engine to generate visual as well as textual profiles. Scaling group collaboration features into project-based matching (e.g., find a co-writer, bandmate, or design partner). Deploying Harmoni for real student communities, fostering cross-campus creative collaboration.
