Purpose
For our project we decided to enhance the business operations of Harley Davidson. We examined their website and determined that their shopping experience for motorcycles, parts, and accessories was insufficient and could be significantly more user friendly. Currently the Harley Davidson website has an extensive catalog of parts and motorcycles. The catalog has many features which are excellent including: filtering and sorting of items, compatibility checks between parts and motorcycles, and extensive information on each component. While this may be a good system there is certainly room for improvement. The current system is overwhelming, not visually stimulating, and it is not friendly to novices. Harley Davidson is losing many potential clients due to this design. Only the most diehard bikers are able to successfully browse the catalog and find what they want. Harley Davidson needs a design change in their website to make it accessible to motorcycle enthusiasts and amateurs. The change that is necessary is the Harley-Davidson Garage. The H-D Garage makes shopping easier to understand, easier to access, and visually engaging for everyone.
The Database
The Database code that we created in java utilizes a 3 Dimensional Array to store values for key statistics of parts, seeking to improve upon the H-D search system. Every single part has a specific location, with details on Price, Star Rating, Performance Rating, and a dummy variable that will identify when the user wants to know information about the part. There are many ways to search - for a specific part, browsing stores, or organizing all parts by criteria. Each of these helps to make amateurs more aware of the value of other pieces and what can be done. There is a video demo of this being demonstrated at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qJLDpbHU6wr0OICNotLUT6J7zOJlSWa1/view
The Garage
The H-D Garage is a new way to browse for motorcycle parts and accessories. It will be complement and enhance the extensive, searchable catalog already in place. It will utilize a drag and drop system that will help customers customize their motorcycles in order to make it their dream ride. The H-D garage will utilize features already in place; the customer is able to go into the shop, select the year and model of a motorcycle, and search as well as filter through all motorcycle parts that Harley Davidson has to offer for that model. Once the customer finds a part they would like to add to their motorcycle (ex: windshield), they can drag and drop the item onto the motorcycle and it will appear on the picture as well as give detail on the product including performance and reliability. This system combines the powerful search tool of the current website while presenting it in a way that makes it more user friendly and accessible to all. An integral part of the garage is the ui. The ui consists of three parts: the motorcycle, additional information, and the catalog. The catalog will be a bar on the right complete with all of the search features currently available. The items from the right can be dragged onto the appropriate spot on the motorcycle (orange boxes on the mock-up below). Once dragged onto the image, a wealth of information already available in the current catalog will appear in the additional information box. A mockup of this ui is shown in the title picture and attached image. A video demonstration is available at https://drive.google.com/file/d/185qO3PMM0_hb_Xey99wAMlSoAGP4YbTE/view
The products are displayed on the right and could theoretically be sorted, filtered, and browsed like the current catalog. However unlike the current catalog items could be dragged onto the motorcycle. The additional information tab is currently displaying information for the 9-spoke wheels which have just been added to the motorcycle. This mock up also shows another feature that could be added to the website. All the products have piston icons. These icons show the consumer the expected level of performance for each part. Four pistons mean that it the product is the best in its category (gaskets for example) while one piston options are budget oriented. These icons will make bike shopping even more accessible to a novice while being a useful addition for enthusiasts. In addition to this ui mockup we have made an html website mockup that demonstrates the drag and drop functionality of the H-D Garage. This mock up is explained in one of the attached video. The website will combine the ui of one mockup and drag and drop feature of the other in order make the in depth catalog of Harley Davidson more accessible and visually appealing. This will make the entirety of the Harley Davidson website more user friendly, and will increase the amount of potential buyers due to the fact that customers that are new to the motorcycle industry are no longer intimidated by the overwhelming aspects of the old website while retaining older customers with the extensive searchable catalog.
