Inspiration
We were inspired by other multiplayer puzzle-platformer games like Pico Park, Fireboy and Watergirl, and Portal 2.
What it does
It's a game where two players need to work with each other in order to progress. From the second level, one player solves puzzles on the top of side of the screen, while another player navigates through enemies and platforms along the way to complete the game.
How we built it
We built it using Construct 3, a free software for making simple games. Along with that, our visual assets were provided to us by art team.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into were time constraints, making a game in just 26 hours is no easy feat. In addition, Construct 3, while good for making simple games does not provide intuitive options for making custom functions. This made tasks such as the final boss extremely difficult to implement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was a first time for game development for everyone in our group, so the fact that we were able to produce anything remotely playable is an accomplishment to be proud of in of itself. Our art team did exceptional, and provided an excessive amount of assets in a short amount of time. Level 2 is pretty good!
What we learned
We learned how to use Construct 3 for game development, and that it's terrible for it, especially for team-based activities. Our artists who have never worked with animations frames had their first stab at it, and did great. Communication and teamwork based skills were also improved upon. We also gained a deeper appreciation for game developers as we understood what they have to go through to complete their creativity.
What's next for Hare-Raising Tails
If we chose to redo the project, we would move over to a different engine, such as Unity. Otherwise, sharpening up the boss fight would be the highest priority.
