Inspiration

Kids are the future of each generation and although they are young and naive, they will eventually carry on the world's innovations and progress. Knowing this, we decided to make a kid-friendly learning tool for kindergarteners to learn about expected behaviors in elementary school.

What it does

Kindergarteners open our website and are greeted by Sammy, a friendly red panda! Kindergarteners will click on locations that they want to learn about, like school or the playground, and then click on an icon, like the monkey bars, where Sammy will then tell the user something helpful about the icon.

How we built it

We used Velo by Wix to develop our website. Especially since we are all beginners, Velo was a great tool to use to make it fun for us to participate throughout the weekend. We utilized our skills such as design, by drawing everything on our website. We used javascript to change the scenes on our website, as well as change the text that Sammy says to the user.

Challenges we ran into

Being complete beginners, we struggled initially due to how intimidating developing a full website was. Thinking of an idea that we felt was possible for our skillset was difficult. Coding the main functionality of our website, how the user will learn about different parts of elementary school, was brain-frying as well as designing each and every piece of art was very time consuming.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Initially, we felt like we wouldn’t be able to have a final product by the end of the weekend; however, we decided to do something fun and enjoyable anyway. We are so glad that we decided to participate in TAMUhack and continued to make a website that we thought would be fun because we ended up making something just because we were having fun making it. Although we did not think we could come out with a final product, the sheer amount of us WANTING to complete it, pushed us through!

What we learned

We learned that, no matter what, throw yourself in uncomfortable situations and enjoy every moment of it. You never know what you could accomplish!

What's next for Happy Days - A Children's Education Tool

Coming in, I only knew one person in my group and met my other two teammates at the event. Surprisingly, this group of guys made this weekend so enjoyable and honestly, I don’t think I would’ve been able to continue this project without them. Happy Days is a fun educational tool that we developed that could be further worked on with more days of work, which I would love to continue with this group of guys.
