Happify: Detect, Support, Grow Together!
🧠 Inspiration
Mental health challenges among Indonesian adolescents are increasing, yet 1 in 3 young people struggle to recognize early emotional changes, seek help due to stigma, or access timely support (I-NAMHS 2022). We created Happify to make mental health support more approachable through AI, community, and human-centered technology that encourages early intervention before problems become more severe.
💡 What it does
Happify is an AI-powered mental wellness ecosystem that helps users Detect, Support, and Grow. It combines an AI companion device, mobile and web applications, mood tracking, AI-assisted journaling, anonymous peer communities, emotional heatmaps, mindfulness activities, and professional referrals to provide continuous mental health support while prioritizing privacy and safety.
🛠 How we built it
We built Happify using:
- Web Frontend: React + Vite, TailwindCSS, ShadCN, Rechart.js
- Mobile: Dart and Flutter
- Backend: Node.js, Express, Prisma
- Database: PostgreSQL and Firebase
- AI: Python, FastAPI, Ollama
- Deployment: Docker and Netifly
🚧 Challenges we ran into
Here are some of the challenges from a developer’s perspective:
- Time Management : Balancing time between brainstorming sessions, coding, and discussions was a significant learning curve. We had to quickly adapt and find ways to manage our time effectively.
- Maintaining Focus : Staying focused during long hours of coding was tough. We had to take breaks, keep each other motivated, and sometimes just step away for a bit to clear our minds.
- Fully Integrated Ecosystem : One of our biggest challenges was integrating AI, IoT, web, and mobile into a single ecosystem while maintaining a smooth user experience. We also focused on balancing AI capabilities with privacy, safety, and responsible mental health support, ensuring the system provides early assistance without acting as a diagnostic tool.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built an end-to-end mental health platform that combines AI voice interactions, mood analysis, journaling, anonymous communities, emotional heatmaps, professional referrals, and an AIoT companion device into one cohesive ecosystem with a working web and mobile prototype.
📚 What we learned
This project taught us that impactful AI solutions require more than advanced technology, they must be human-centered, privacy-aware, and designed with real user needs in mind. We also gained valuable experience in full-stack development, AI integration, IoT systems, and cross-platform collaboration.
🚀 What's next for Happify
Our next steps are to integrate multimodal emotion recognition, expand partnerships with psychologists and healthcare providers, deploy the AI companion device in real-world pilot programs, and further personalize AI recommendations to support long-term emotional well-being across schools and communities.
