Hanoi’s Old Quarter has always been one of the most iconic cultural symbols of Vietnam narrow streets, ancient tile-roof houses, lantern lights, and the unmistakable aroma of a hot bowl of phở drifting through the morning air. I wanted to bring that atmosphere into Meta Horizon so people around the world could experience the charm, warmth, and rhythm of Hanoi in an immersive way.

Hanoi Heritage World inspiration from Brother Hai’s Pho Restaurant, a Vietnamese indie simulation PC game that recently went viral on Youtube and Tiktok. Influenced by its surprising narrative twists and lively pho shop setting, especially after YouTuber Kubz Scouts (with over 6.3 million subscribers) livestreamed “Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant” and praised its unexpected moments, this world aims to reimagine that energy in a cozy, social Horizon experience.

Hanoi Heritage World Experience brings players into the heart of Vietnam’s capital, recreating the charm, warmth, and vibrant atmosphere of Hanoi.

Upon entering the world, players instantly find themselves inside a bustling Phở shop, making the core gameplay intuitive from the very first moment. Players take on the role of a shop owner, preparing and serving bowls of traditional Vietnamese Phở — a globally renowned dish and a cultural symbol of Hanoi.

Players currently serve NPC customers, with future updates planned to introduce player-to-player trading and cooperative shop management. Beyond the shop, the world expands into a familiar Hanoi neighborhood featuring rustic houses, a lively park filled with minigames, and a large parking area that adds life and scale to the environment.

The experience aims to evoke a sense of simplicity, warmth, and nostalgia for those who have visited Hanoi, while offering new visitors an authentic and lively introduction to the city.

Smooth & Intuitive First-Time Experience

The world is designed for instant recognition and ease of play. As soon as players spawn, the Phở restaurant appears directly in front of them, clearly presenting the objective without the need for tutorials. Core interactions such as cooking, serving, and food preparation follow natural Horizon interaction patterns, enabling new players to understand the gameplay within seconds. The environment layout is simple to navigate, with familiar real-world structures, and optimized performance ensures smooth gameplay even during busy in-world moments.

How I Built It

Hanoi Heritage World Experience integrates several advanced Horizon tools and systems to create a seamless and responsive environment:

  • Custom UI for clean menus, prompts, and progress displays
  • Leaderboards to track top performers and encourage friendly competition
  • Persistent Variables to save player progress and store earned rewards
  • Respawn system that resets players smoothly without interrupting gameplay
  • Object Pooling for efficient spawning of food items, customers, and minigame objects
  • VFX & Spatial Audio to enhance the realism of city ambience, and park activities
  • Optimized scripts and lightweight assets for stable performance across sessions These systems come together to create a technically solid, scalable, and engaging world experience.

The world was built by combining stylized 3D assets, hand-painted textures, and lighting designed to mimic the warm tone of Hanoi mornings. I used Meta Horizon’s world-building tools to assemble the environment, adjust layout composition, and craft an experience that feels calm, inviting, and culturally authentic.

Future Improvements

I plan to deepen the experience with more interactive activities and distinctly East Asian-inspired details, so that players can truly feel what it is like to live and dine in Hanoi in the most vivid and engaging way. From savoring iconic street food and discovering hidden alleyways to enjoying Vietnamese specialties like cà phê trứng under glowing lanterns, the goal is to showcase Vietnam’s culture and cuisine to global players through an immersive virtual reality world.

Social Connection & Shared Moments

This world is built to encourage cooperation, creativity, and shared fun. Players can work together behind the counter to prepare and serve Phở, collaborate to increase shop efficiency, or simply enjoy the busy ambiance of Hanoi life. The park area offers opportunities for players to play minigames together, capture memorable photos, and relax in a social, friendly environment. Whether serving side-by-side, exploring Hanoi’s charming streets, or enjoying the attractions in the park, players are encouraged to create and share meaningful moments throughout the experience.
