Inspiration 💡
Due to COVID-19, the importance of globalization and interconnection across the world is reemphasized and reframed. Therefore, being able to understand and write other languages is crucial for all of us nowadays. As individuals who are enthralled in learning various cultures, different languages and the concept of diversity, we wanted to share our culture and language in order to foster an inclusive and diverse environment. Therefore, we were inspired to create our own website that educates people worldwide about the Korean alphabet system, called Hangul.
What it does ✏️
Hangul • 한글 is an educational website, targeted explicitly for people who would like to expand their knowledge and explore the depth of the Hangul system. Our website contains a variety of information such as the origin of Hangul, a fun fact, a descriptive system of Hangul (consonants and vowels), as well as some practice examples to test your knowledge. Therefore, Hangul • 한글 website will effectively teach you the basics of the Hangul system, historical background and a shortcut to become a Hangul expert.
How we built it ⚙️
Even though we are beginners in HTML, we wanted to take this opportunity to learn more, gain experiences and challenge ourselves. Since we did not have any knowledge of HTML, we have studied the principles of HTML through watching videos, reading articles and completing example modules. As a result, we have successfully created a website, Hangul • 한글 by implementing various HTML codes and mechanics in order to keep the information organized and impactful. In addition, we have specifically utilized headings, paragraphs, numbered lists, bullet lists, tables and links to explore the profound understanding of Hangul further.
Challenges we ran into 🎯
Due to the limited features and functions of HTML language, compared to JavaScript, it was highly challenging for us to add complex and advanced features. For instance, we wanted to create a page where users can test their knowledge in Hangul by providing example questions and answers in a quiz format. However, we have realized that a quiz feature can only be built by a high-level coding language such as JavaScript. Fortunately, we have successfully resolved this problem by adding a separate example answers HTML file and linking it to the questions HTML file, using “ ” tag. Even though these are the basics and fundamental coding tags of HTML, we were glad that we could use them in appropriate situations to maximize convenience and enhance user’s interactive learning styles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆
We are proud to complete a project in a short given time. Although we did not have lots of experience in coding and HTML, we have accomplished creating a website that can share our cultures and stories. We have also developed time management skills, collaboration and effective work ethics as we planned the layout and incorporated various HTML tags. Overall, we strongly value our participation, experiences, creativity and the potential impact that our website might have in the future.
What we learned 📓
For the past few days in Hack the North, we have gained lots of experiences that allowed us to expand our limitations and widen perspectives. Since our passion and interest in coding were sincere, we have demonstrated the ability to face obstacles, challenged ourselves and gained the confidence to submit our project. Therefore, we are grateful we could reflect our new strength through this incredible opportunity.
What's next for Hangul • 한글 📈
Our next goal for Hangul • 한글 is to create more helpful sources further, increase the complexity and add more pages by using various HTML features. We would like to record proper pronunciation and add audio files to enhance auditory learning and cognitive development. Moreover, we could also expand more difficult phrases, sentences, and paragraphs examples for intermediate and advanced Hangul learners. Last but not least, we plan to implement designs, colors, fonts and graphics for visually appealing effects.
