Inspiration

Covid is coming to an end, people are feeling cooped up, and small businesses are still feeling the repercussions of the pandemic. So, providing a way for people to get back outside and a way to shop at small local businesses helps give them, and users, the support they need. Going along with the beach theme of “Hang Ten” we chose to make an app centering around beaches, surfing, and other outdoor activities.

What it does

Hang Ten gives users a central location for users to find beaches, activities, shops, and look at the weather to help find the best place and time for a vacation. Because our app has a lot of information that a traveler would need, it helps users better understand the conditions of the beach when they plan their travel. This makes it easier to decide when and where to go for the best relaxation, the best conditions for surfing, or even scuba-diving. Instead of having to go through other websites for this information, our app acts as an all-in-one for a beach goer’s needs.

How we built it

We used Sketch and Adobe XD to develop the UI design, prototype, and create mockups. We also used Xcode to try and develop an IOS demo app by using a combination of APIs. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to complete it. To record our demo, we used OBS and iMovie.

Challenges we ran into

One of our first challenges came with a difference of devices. One of us uses a Microsoft computer, while the other uses a Mac. It was a continuous trial and error process to find an application that worked for us. Another issue came with attempting to verify a domain name with google cloud, as it was originally our intention to create a website rather than an app. This was one problem that we couldn't find a resolution for due to time constraints and other factors, so we switched over to creating a mobile app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the concept we came up with. We thought it was original and unique. We put that excitement into the actual effort of making our vision a reality. We are proud to have not given up when roadblocks came our way. We are also quite proud of the mapping we were able to do via adobe Xd, especially since this was our first time designing. That was admittedly a lot of fun.

What we learned

We learned about creating a domain name as well as how to use Adobe DX for the first time. Not only that but it helped our skills in time management considering the pace at which we worked.

What's next for HangTen

We would love to add more features like another page to look up and book flights. Another idea was to create a form of social media strictly for beaches. It would use an AI that sorted out user uploaded pictures, removing anything that isn’t a beach or local business to maximize content relevant to the app.
