A TikTok video started it all. After watching the countless numbers of donuts thrown away after the end of the workday, we decided that it was time to take action. Despite the fact that there are millions of people going to sleep hungry, big corporations and food businesses are throwing away perfectly safe food. So we created this app to tackle the problem of food wastage and create a rescue plan.
Our project incorporates two concepts: Food rescue and donation. Following an open marketplace framework, both corporations and individuals can decide to create an account. In fact, we also encourage individuals to help because even though there are several food drives, not everyone had access to them due to a lack of information and geographical difficulties. At the end of the day, this is a space where all information about food drives and donation spots can be accessed through one space.
How we built it
We build the project using react native and firebase databases. The framework was designed using Figma. We've incorporated the use of Twilio for user authentication.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create several interactive pages where users have the opportunity to create events for donating food, find local food rescue operations, and ensure food accessibility for all. We also decided to create a page for college students to use their meal swipes in order to allow people from lower-income backgrounds to find food as well.
What we learned
We learned that beyond creating the app, it's important to advertise it in a way so that both local vendors as well as those in need, can interact with one another to create daily events. In doing so, it would be important to partner with certain organizations are that willing to sponsor "Food rescue" events. Additionally, since a part of the app caters to college students, it would be essential to partner with universities that are willing for meal swipes to be interchanged for monetary value in different areas.
What's next for HungryBirds?
We've hoping to build onto the ideas of this project to create a stronger userbase and allow more people reap the benefits of an open food sharing marketplace.
