Inspiration
After being left behind by a large group of friends on a night out for a 21st birthday celebration, Sophya wished for an easier way to keep track of multiple contacts without having to rely on Find My Friends and its privacy concerns. With this need in mind, we set out to develop an app that prioritizes simplicity and safety.
What it does
SisterCircle empowers women globally to feel safe and secure while enjoying a night out. With real-time location tracking and notifications, you and your friends can stay aware of each other's whereabouts for added peace of mind. Our app's hassle-free team functionality enables quick and seamless group formation, providing women with a convenient experience.
How we built it
Our app is built with a React Native frontend and utilizes Firebase's NoSQL database, Firestore, for data storage and tracking. Firebase's extensive real-time data synchronization capabilities make it an ideal choice for a location-based app, enabling us to track and update the locations of multiple users in real time.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, transitioning to Firebase presented challenges as it was a novel platform for us. However, after overcoming initial hurdles with locating data, we were able to significantly improve our task efficiency.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is proud of the numerous accomplishments we have achieved. One of the most significant milestones was completing the basic functions of our project, which was a challenging task that required a lot of hard work and dedication from our team. We also successfully implemented a database feature, which was a new experience for us and presented various difficulties. However, through determination and collaboration, we were able to overcome these obstacles and deliver a high-quality result.
Another accomplishment that we are particularly proud of is our ability to adapt to new technologies. Our team was able to successfully use React Native, which was a completely new platform for us. This not only helped us expand our skills and knowledge, but it also allowed us to provide a better user experience. These achievements demonstrate our team's determination, creativity, and commitment to delivering exceptional results.
What we learned
One of our key takeaways from the project was the acquisition of new skills, specifically in React Native and Firebase. Both were previously unknown to us, but through the project, we were able to gain a comprehensive understanding and mastery of these technologies.
What's next for Sister Circle
We aim to enhance the app by incorporating personalization options for each user, such as a profile picture and custom alert sound. This will make it easier to identify who has strayed from the group and locate their whereabouts on the map. To further tailor the experience, we will also offer adjustable settings for the alert trigger distance, accessible through a simple slider bar.
