Hangout

Hangout is a web app on which people can chat with each other. The thing which makes hangout unique is that users will get notifications via SMS if someone messaged them while they were offline.

Inspiration

What inspired us to create a web-based platform that accompanies the discord-style chat experience along with an option for SMS notification in case the user is offline.

What it does

Hangout enables the users to create a chat with other users, create custom channels for specific reasons, and also can send SMS notifications to offline users.

How we built it

The front-end was built using the react UI-library, the chat was implemented using getStream.io, the SMS notifications feature was made using Twilio, and the backend of the project with node and express framework.

Challenges we ran into

We feel that implementing getStream.io with react was a pretty tough and time-consuming task.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to understand the tools and were able to finish the project in time.

What we learned

We learned various react concepts like state management, prop drilling, etc., and also got familiar with getStream.io and Twilio

What's next for Hangout

The next features that can be implemented are voice-servers and video calling to make Hangout more versatile.
