Inspiration

Handycan was inspired by the lack of accessible information about places in the community for people with disabilities. We noticed that many people with disabilities struggle to find places that meet their needs and often have to rely on trial and error to find accessible locations. Our goal is to make it easier for people with disabilities to find and access the places they need and want to go.

What it does

Handycan is a mobile application that connects people with disabilities with information about accessible places in their community. It provides detailed reviews and feedback from users with disabilities, helping disabled individuals find places and facilities that meet their needs. The app uses a rating system to help users easily identify which places are the most accessible and provides a map view that allows users to see the location of accessible places in their area. Users can search for specific types of locations and filter results based on accessibility criteria.

How we built it

Handycan was built using React Native, Google Firebase, and the Google Maps API. React Native allowed us to create a user-friendly and responsive app that can run on both iOS and Android devices. We used Google Firebase to store and manage the user-generated reviews and ratings, while the Google Maps API provided the map view and search functionality.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was technical challenges while integrating the Google Maps API into the React Native app. However, we were able to overcome these challenges by conducting thorough research and reading through the documentation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the impact Handycan will have on the lives of people with disabilities. By providing accurate and up-to-date information about accessible places, we hope to make it easier for people with disabilities to find and access the places they need and want to go. Additionally, we are proud of the user-friendly and responsive design of the app, which we believe will make it accessible and enjoyable for all users.

What we learned

Through the development of Handycan, we learned the importance of accurate and up-to-date information about accessible places and the impact it can have on the lives of people with disabilities. We also gained valuable experience in React Native development and learned how to effectively integrate APIs into our app.

What's next for Handycan

We plan to continue to improve and expand Handycan by incorporating new features and capabilities, such as audio-to-text support and real-time updates on the accessibility of locations. We also plan to increase the number of user-generated reviews and ratings to provide the most comprehensive and accurate information about accessible places in the community.
